Summer school is a time for maintaining academic knowledge and skills in reading, language arts, math, social studies and science while creating a fun atmosphere in which children are excited to continue their educational growth.

Children attending summer school at Dewey Elementary School, step off the bus in the morning and are served breakfast. The day begins at 8 a.m. and ends at 3:10 p.m. with lunch in the middle.

Summer school teachers use fun and entertaining materials and techniques that encourage hands-on activities and small group situations. "Teachers are really doing a good job of infusing some academic skills in fun activities," said Pam Brobst, Dewey Elementary School Principal. Picture Perfect, Local Performances and Summer Sizzle are just three of six classes that Dewey offers in the afternoon sessions.

Picture Perfect teaches students the skill of photography. Each student learns the art of taking pictures, still life and action photography and learns methods of framing, as well as how to take visual illusion photos.  Local Performance teaches children the theatrical side of art. Students make props and costumes to enhance the plays put on by the class. Summer Sizzle is also fun for students while also educational. One of the most anticipated events for this class will be making homemade ice cream.

Summer school first began in Chillicothe as a Title 1 program, which is a more intense, individualized program that presents the material in different ways in smaller groups. Students are assessed on their own level for those needing extra remedial help. Summer school is now geared toward all students who wish to participate and prepare for the next grade level. Teachers and staff inspire creativity among all students while teaching skills they will need for the upcoming year.
