School District to Contract with Newton Learning Again

The Chillicothe R-2 school district will contract with Newton Learning for its summer school program in 2008 following a 6-1 vote Tuesday night during the board's regular December meeting held at district headquarters.

Superintendent Dale Wallace recommended that the district stay with Newton Learning for one more summer instead of providing the program in-house because of the loss of summer school supplies in May during the flood. He estimated that the district would save between $60,000 and $70,000 in conducting the program itself. However he noted that the district lost all carryover supplies and some curriculum in the flood.

“We could potentially save some more dollars, but (contracting with Newton) would minimize a sizable amount of work for several people,” Wallace said. He added that if not for the flood and primarily the loss of curriculum, the district would be in a better position to venture out on its own.

Board member Rick Baker provided the lone dissenting vote. He explained yesterday (Wednesday) that he feels the district has the staff and administrative ability to create its own program (with assistance from other area schools who have their own programs) and save $60,000.

Newton's fee to provide the summer school program has dropped from $345,034 to $285,000 and the district will pocket an estimated $306,000, according to the contract with Newton.
