R-2 Applies for
FEMA Funds to Pay $122,000 in Flood Costs The paperwork is finished and the waiting game has now begun for the Chillicothe R-2 School District. Officials there say they have applied for federal aid to cover about $122,000 in restoration and repair bills from the May flood which soaked the basement of the Chillicothe Administrative offices. Government funds won't likely be distributed until November or December. The district will match the disaster aid by 15%. "We're probably looking at the first of December before the actual government funds start being dispersed," R-2 Assistant Supt. Dave may explained. He noted that once the district earns approval from the FEMA, the funds are sent to the State Emergency Management Agency, which then disperses the money. The basement of the R-2 building flooded in May after the Grand River escaped its banks and crested at 37.1 feet before falling. The flood stage of the Grand River south of Chillicothe is 24'. Costs to repair the building's elevator system will likely be the highest price tag associated with the repairs - $52,000. He noted that the district will move forward with repair arrangements, regardless of whether the district receives enough disaster relief to cover it. All of the elevator's controls are being moved from the basement to the second floor as a proactive measure. Other costs include labor, equipment, manpower, and materials involved with restoration. Everything in the basement has been cleaned and dried and the building's electrical, plumbing, and heating and air conditioning systems were examined to ensure they were up to code. |
