Duck Stamp
Contest Entries to be Displayed in District Art Show C-T Photo / Catherine Stortz Ripley
CAPTION - Students in Dorlene Meneely's art classes at Chillicothe High School received honors in the Junior Duck Stamp Contest. From left: Teacher Dorlene Meneely; Lauren Crawford, second place state winner; and honorable mention award recipients Amber Kieffer, Tyson Blattner, Bekah Anderson, and Lexi Truong. The Junior Duck stamp contest is a subordinate contest to the national duck stamp contest in which professional artists compete to be selected as the artist of the national waterfowl hunting stamp. The Junior Duck Stamp is made into a collectors stamp available for sale online. It is not a hunting stamp. Almost 800 different pieces of artwork from students across the state were judged in Columbia. Winners were chosen from four separate age groups. Missouri winners received a ribbon, a waterfowl identification book, a gift card from Bass Pro, last year's winning stamp and a certificate of appreciation. Artwork design entries are limited to the North American wild duck, geese, or swans of the state of Missouri. Judges give preference to anatomically accurate depictions of the species. Lauren Crawford, daughter of Brenda Crawford, won second place at the state level. She is a sophomore student of CHS art teacher Dorlene Meneely. Other CHS students from Meneely's art classes received honorable mention. They are: Amber Kieffer, sophomore, daughter of Robert and Michelle Kieffer; Tyson Blattner, a senior, son of Terry and Joyce Blattner; Bekah Anderson, senior, daughter of Roger and Sharon Anderson; and Lexi Truong, junior, daughter of David and Ngai Truong. The students created their artwork using acrylic and tempera paint. Their entries are now part of a traveling display; however, those visiting the Chillicothe R-2 districtwide art show will be able to view these paintings as well as other artwork on display. The art show, to be at Gary Dickinson Performing Arts Center, is open on Sunday from 2 until 5 p.m. and can also be viewed from 3 until 8 p.m. on both Monday and Tuesday.
