R-2 Board to Amend 2007-08
Budget The Chillicothe R-2 School Board will amend the 2007-08 budget and likely approve a student drug testing policy during the regular July meeting tomorrow (Tuesday) night at district headquarters. The open meeting is slated to begin at 6:30 p.m. with an executive session scheduled afterward. The amended budget will likely reflect Superintendent Dale Wallace's recommendations for the 2007-08 salary schedule and non-certified salaries with some changes in expenditures in an attempt to offset potential deficit spending. Specifically, the superintendent will recommend a $1,000 non-indexed salary schedule increase, raising the district's base salary for beginning teachers to $28,000. Wallace is also recommending a 4 percent increase for non-certified and administrative raises. Also on the agenda for the evening is a look at a proposed drug testing policy for middle school and high school students. If the board approves the policy, it will be implemented at the beginning of the 2007-08 school year this fall. “The responses that I have received this past month have continued to be positive in that people are supportive of our efforts to help combat what appears to be a growing problem,” Wallace said. The policy facing board approval stipulates that as a condition of participating in extra-curricular activities and receiving a parking pass to park on school property, middle and high school students and their parents must consent to random drug testing of the students. If a consent form is not signed, the student will not be eligible to participate in extra-curricular activities or park on school property for the entire school year. The program will not affect other policies and practices of the R-2 school district in dealing with drugs or alcohol use or possession where reasonable suspicion is obtained by means other than the mandatory and random sampling of the program. |
